Feyenoord, who sit second in the league, put an end to a streak of three consecutive draws by defeating FC Groningen 3-1 on Saturday, maintaining their lead over NEC Nijmegen in the standings.
Before the 31st round of the Dutch Eredivisie kicked off, Feyenoord held a slender one-point advantage over NEC, who are currently in third place. However, the team had struggled recently, with their last league victory coming on March 15 against Excelsior (2-1).
With Gernot Trauner making his first start in over a year, Australian left-back Jordan Bos opened the scoring early on, striking a brilliant shot into the top right corner of Etienne Vaessen’s goal following a lay-off from Luciano Valente just 11 minutes in.
Shortly after, Bos was instrumental again, this time earning a penalty in the 21st minute after being brought down by Vaessen. Ayase Ueda, the league’s top scorer, converted from the spot, sending the ball to the left corner and doubling Feyenoord’s advantage.
Despite FC Groningen creating a few chances towards the end of the first half, Ueda had a golden opportunity to extend the lead shortly after the interval but was unable to capitalise on a counter-attack.
Nonetheless, Ueda found the net again, expertly evading Tijmen Blokzijl before slotting the ball into the bottom corner, effectively sealing the match with over 20 minutes left to play.
The day was also historic for Feyenoord as Ilai Grootfaam became the youngest player ever to play in an Eredivisie match at just 16 years and 41 days old.
Thom van Bergen, who leads the league in shots this season, scored the sole goal for Groningen, tapping the ball into Wellenreuther’s net after Dies Janse intercepted it deep in Feyenoord’s half.
Raheem Sterling, who is set to depart Feyenoord when his contract expires in June, had a chance to score his first goal for the club in the dying minutes but failed to find the back of the net, leaving the score at 3-1.
With three matches remaining, Feyenoord remain well-positioned in the battle for the second and final ticket to the league phase of the UEFA Champions League next season, enjoying a 4-point cushion over NEC before they face FC Twente later on Saturday.
