Barcelona took a significant step towards clinching the LaLiga title with a hard-fought 2-0 win against Getafe at Estadio Coliseum, overcoming a side that had triumphed in seven of their last ten encounters.
Robert Lewandowski was quick to test the waters, sending a powerful header just over the crossbar as Barcelona looked to penetrate Getafe’s robust defensive line.
Dani Olmo struggled to assist his Polish teammate during another attacking moment for the visitors. Despite Barcelona’s superior style, Getafe’s physicality was proving effective, with Mauro Arambarri coming close on a couple of occasions.
Joao Cancelo was a standout performer on the right for Barcelona, and his well-timed pass found Olmo just before the half-hour mark; however, his ensuing cross was comfortably dealt with by the home side.
As half-time approached, Roony Bardghji unleashed a powerful shot that just skimmed past the post. Getafe countered quickly and found themselves in a two-on-one situation, yet Davinchi mishandled what should have been a prime opportunity.
In the dying moments of the first half, Fermin Lopez showcased his value to the Blaugrana by slotting the ball past David Soria, giving the visitors a crucial advantage as they entered the break.

Upon resuming after the break, Getafe came out with renewed energy, aggressively tackling in an attempt to disrupt the league leaders.
Olmo had the best opportunity to extend Barcelona’s lead, yet Soria was fortunate to parry the striker’s deft right-footed strike, followed closely by a header from Jules Kounde that just missed the target.
For Getafe to claw their way back into the match with just over 20 minutes remaining, they would need to vastly improve upon their possession statistic of 20.3%.
Once again, Olmo failed to convert a promising chance, before Marcus Rashford exploited a gap in the defence to score and double the visitors’ lead, as Getafe’s entire outfield players were caught out of position.
This goal ultimately sealed a result that extends Barcelona’s lead to 11 points at the top of the table with five matches remaining, putting them in a strong position to claim the league title with forthcoming victories against Osasuna and Real Madrid.
Conversely, Getafe now risks falling out of European contention if results do not go their way this weekend.
