Spurs midfielder Xavi Simons was taken off on a stretcher during Saturday’s Premier League clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers, after appearing to suffer a serious knee injury.
Simons was engaged in a challenge with Wolves defender Hugo Bueno when he collapsed to the ground, clutching his knee and shouting in pain. Although the Spurs medical team assessed him briefly, they ultimately decided he needed to be carried off the pitch.
While a definitive diagnosis has yet to be confirmed, there are concerns that Simons may have damaged his anterior cruciate ligament, potentially sidelining him for as long as a year.
Spurs manager Roberto de Zerbi provided an optimistic update on Simons’ condition following his team’s 1-0 victory: “I spoke with the doctor, but they don’t know (the extent). They will need to see the player on Monday and Tuesday,” said the Italian regarding Simons and Solanke, who was also substituted due to injury but managed to leave the field unaided.
“We will know more in the coming days. He (Simons) experienced pain, but I talked to him, and he feels better than when the injury occurred,” De Zerbi added.
Another Injury Concern for Oranje
Xavi Simons’ possible injury may add to Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman’s troubles, with the FIFA World Cup just 47 days away. Koeman has faced a number of player absences lately, with Frenkie de Jong, Emmanuel Emegha, Matthijs de Ligt, Mark Flekken, and Jeremie Frimpong all missing the March friendlies and possibly more matches ahead.
PSV captain and Oranje midfielder Jerdy Schouten has already been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering an ACL tear in early April.
