Liverpool manager Arne Slot has indicated that Freddie Woodman is expected to take on the role of goalkeeper during Saturday’s fixture against Crystal Palace at Anfield.
With Giorgi Mamardashvili confirmed as unavailable and Alisson battling to regain fitness, Slot mentioned earlier today that the most likely scenario would see third-choice keeper Woodman stepping in to face Crystal Palace.
Liverpool approaches this match sitting in fifth position on the Premier League table, just three points shy of fourth-placed Aston Villa.
“Giorgi is definitely out of contention for the next week,” Slot explained.
“Alisson is nearing a return, but we’ll see if he’s ready in time for tomorrow. That leaves Freddie as our option.”
“We brought in an experienced third-choice goalkeeper for a reason, and we were pleased to acquire him on a free transfer.
“Beyond being a good shot-stopper, his experience in the Premier League and his character make him well-liked in the dressing room, which is vital for a third-choice keeper.
“He’s up to the challenge, but it would be immensely beneficial for him to have the fans behind him tomorrow.”
Slot expressed confidence in rookie Armin Pesci being on the bench, stating, “He’s already been on the bench before and will certainly be there tomorrow; he has experience playing at a high level in Hungary and has had several appearances with the under-21s, improving all the time.
“He’s still quite young and has room to grow, but we believe he’s a talented keeper with potential to represent Liverpool in the future. If he’s called upon tomorrow, I’d be comfortable with that.”
Concerns Regarding Alisson
This week has also seen speculation from Italian media linking Alisson with a move to Juventus, to which Slot responded by saying, “My focus is solely on the immediate future and getting him back on the pitch. We don’t pay any attention to the rumours circulating about him, myself, or anyone else.”
“We only respond to facts that require addressing, and at this time, there’s nothing to report.
“He’s eager to play for the club he loves and for his national team.”
Regarding Alisson’s injury setbacks this season, Slot noted that they were largely due to the demanding schedule.
“We are monitoring the nature of his injuries. Muscle injuries are always something you aim to prevent through proper training. He’s not alone in this situation.
“However, football has evolved, and muscle injuries are becoming more prevalent, particularly due to the insane schedule. While I personally enjoy having matches to watch every night, it’s clearly taking a toll on player health.
“Age may also play a role, as we witnessed with (Lamine) Yamal suffering an injury; this is attributable to the volume of games they are playing.”
Assessing Crystal Palace
When discussing Crystal Palace, Slot expressed admiration for how they’ve coped with the loss of key players over the past year.
“The challenge comes from the quality of players we face. (Marc) Guehi, (Ebere) Eze, and (Michael) Olise have moved on; Olise is making strides at Bayern Munich, but they have a solid manager who maintains excellent discipline within the squad.
“They are incredibly difficult to create chances against. In any match I watch, the opposing side often struggles to create opportunities after 60 minutes. On the counter, they execute well with talented attackers.
“They’ve conceded the fewest goals after Arsenal, and there’s a clear reason for that.”
Isak and the World Cup
Slot also touched on Alexander Isak’s return to the squad, suggesting that participating in a full World Cup campaign would be advantageous for the Swedish striker.
After missing out on pre-season and suffering a double leg fracture in December, Isak only made his comeback this month.
While the World Cup will mean a shorter pre-season for him this summer, Slot remains optimistic about its impact on Isak’s preparations for the upcoming season.
“The World Cup won’t hinder his progress,” he said. “A full pre-season of six weeks would have been ideal, but if he performs well in the World Cup and gets ample game time, that will be beneficial.
“Typically, the pace at the international level is slower compared to the Premier League, but I’m glad to have him back. He’s gone months without training with the team, and coming back mid-season while others are fit is a challenge. Nevertheless, we’re seeing improvement.
“I’m unsure when he’ll hit his peak performance, but I sincerely hope it’s very soon for both him and us.”
A Call for Fan Support
Slot made an appeal for fan backing ahead of planned protests at Anfield, both prior to kick-off and during the match.
Official supporter groups are responding to the club’s decision to raise season ticket prices over the next three years.
In light of this, Slot sought to remind fans of the importance of their support during the match.
“Disagreements are part of football, as they often involve individuals who care deeply about the club’s interests. Just two weeks ago, we felt the full backing of the fans during a protest.
“We’ll need our fans’ support. If Freddie Woodman is to start, he will greatly benefit from the encouragement of our supporters.”
