On Thursday evening, FC Midtjylland seized the top spot in the Danish Superliga table, overtaking AGF. They capitalised on AGF’s 1-1 draw against FC Nordsjaelland by securing a hard-fought yet somewhat fortunate 2-1 victory away at Sonderjyske.
FC Midtjylland approached their match against Sonderjyske with renewed confidence following their victory over AGF on Monday. A win in Haderslev would enable them to leapfrog their rivals from Aarhus and claim top position in the Superliga.
From the outset, the visitors dominated the match and took the lead in the 24th minute. A shot from Dario Osorio was spilled by Sonderjyske’s third-choice goalkeeper, Benicio Pena, allowing Edward Chilufya to pounce on the rebound and slot it in from close quarters.
Despite falling behind, Sonderjyske remained a threat throughout the first half. They were rewarded for their persistence just five minutes before the break. On a swift counter-attack, Matthew Hoppe evaded two defenders before unleashing a powerful shot that found the net off the post, equalising the score.
FC Midtjylland regained their lead shortly after the break when Daniel Gretarsson tragically turned the ball into his own net while attempting to defend Victor Bak’s cross. Sonderjyske had their opportunities to level the match again, coming close when Olofsson made a crucial save on the line. However, the visitors managed to hold on for all three points.
AGF arrived in Farum aiming to lift their spirits after a disappointing defeat to FC Midtjylland, where they conceded two late goals. They were nearly punished early on in the match when Magnus Knudsen made a timely intervention to stop Lamine Sadio from tapping the ball into an empty net.
Instead, the visitors found the boost they needed just three minutes later. Sebastian Jorgensen drove into the box and delivered a square ball across goal for the surging Patrick Mortensen, who calmly slid it home to give AGF a 1-0 lead.
This marked the 36-year-old veteran’s first goal in the Superliga since November 30 of the previous year, showcasing the success of coach Jakob Poulsen’s tactical decisions, as Mortensen and Jorgensen were two of the three new starters from the match on Monday.
The contest remained tightly contested until the very end. While the home side enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, AGF defended resolutely, with goalkeeper Jesper Hansen delivering a solid performance.
However, Hansen was rendered helpless when Levy Nene equalised with just seven minutes remaining. A misplaced pass from Frederik Tingager was intercepted by Caleb Yirenkyi, who launched a long ball past Tingager. Nene had no trouble sliding the ball past Hansen to level the score.
