Aston Villa advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League (UEL) with a commanding 7-1 aggregate victory over Bologna, sealing a remarkable 4-0 win at home for their ninth consecutive triumph in major European matches on home soil.
At the outset, Bologna’s aspirations for advancement appeared slim, yet a vigorous beginning managed to instill a glimmer of hope. Federico Bernardeschi tested the returning Emiliano Martinez with an early shot, while Jonathan Rowe posed a significant threat down the left flank.
Matty Cash did well to contain Rowe, but Villa quickly showcased their clinical nature, taking the lead early in the match.
An intricate sequence through the midfield allowed Emiliano Buendia to play a precise ball to Morgan Rogers on the inside left, who astutely squared for Ollie Watkins to tap in his 100th goal for the club, marking him as the first Villa player to score 10 major goals in European competitions.
Immediately following the opener, Rogers’ curled shot required a fine save from Federico Ravaglia, who later denied Villa’s talisman again from the penalty spot in the 25th minute, diving to his right after Martin Vitik handled Lucas Digne’s cross to give away the penalty.
Unfazed, Villa caught Bologna off guard from a throw-in shortly after that save, with Digne’s well-placed delivery controlled expertly by Buendia near the dead-ball line, before he cut inside and placed a shot past the goalkeeper at his near post.
Ravaglia’s near post was breached yet again in the 39th minute by a determined Rogers, who fired a shot past his persistent rival to end a 12-match scoring drought for both club and country.
This goal effectively sealed the deal for Villa, and despite Vincenzo Italiano’s desperate attempts to instil some urgency into his dispirited team with three substitutions at half-time, the second half became a stroll for Villa.
The hosts rarely ventured forward in the latter stages, yet they still added a fourth goal through Ezri Konsa’s stunning volley.
This victory marks Villa’s sixth consecutive home clean sheet against Italian teams in major European competitions, while Bologna exits Europe with a sixth successive away defeat to English teams, three of which have come against Villa.
