Nottingham Forest has secured a spot in a European semi-final for the first time in 42 years with a tense 1-0 victory over FC Porto in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) quarter-final second leg at the City Ground.
The UEL has offered a much-needed distraction for Forest, who are knee-deep in a Premier League (PL) relegation battle, and the opportunity to make history was not lost on an ecstatic crowd at the City Ground.
Following an early opportunity for Terem Moffi, the tide turned in favour of the home side when Jan Bednarek received a straight red card for a dangerously high challenge on Chris Wood.
This numerical advantage quickly translated into a lead, as Morgan Gibbs-White’s shot took a significant deflection off Pablo Rosario, sailing past Diogo Costa.
Vítor Pereira’s team grew in confidence and could have extended their lead if Nicolas Domínguez hadn’t sent his shot wide.
Challenges arose, however, as Wood had to leave the pitch due to injury after suffering from Bednarek’s challenge.
His substitute, Igor Jesus, made an immediate impact, heading over from a corner taken by Neco Williams, while Domínguez glanced a header wide from Dan Ndoye’s delivery during first-half stoppage time.

Forest came close to paying for their lack of finishing in the first half when William Gomes struck the crossbar after connecting with Seko Fofana’s high pass.
The home team’s slender lead was starting to look precarious, prompting Pereira to make two more substitutions, bringing off injured players Callum Hudson-Odoi and Murillo.
The hosts lost a bit of their earlier intensity, but Costa was called upon to save Jesus’s well-placed shot.
The tension for Forest escalated when Alan Varela’s speculative effort struck the crossbar, but Francesco Farioli’s side could not find the equaliser on a challenging night for them.
Ultimately, Forest managed to hold on and secured a place in a European semi-final for the first time since their victory over Sturm Graz in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup quarter-finals.
A thrilling all-PL semi-final matchup against Aston Villa awaits, while Porto exits the competition still searching for their first victory against a PL team in England after 24 attempts (D3, L21).
