Lionel Messi has officially acquired the Catalan club Cornella, becoming the new owner of the fifth-tier Spanish side, as announced by the club on Thursday.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is currently plying his trade in the United States with Inter Miami and is anticipated to play a pivotal role in Argentina’s defence of their World Cup title later this year.
“This acquisition reinforces Messi’s strong connections to Barcelona and underscores his dedication to nurturing local talent and the sport in Catalonia,” stated the club in their announcement regarding the former Barcelona star’s new role.
Cornella has been a springboard for several prominent players, including Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya and Messi’s erstwhile Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba.
However, the club has faced challenges lately, experiencing back-to-back relegations over the last two seasons.
“The arrival of Leo Messi signifies the dawn of a new era in the club’s journey, focusing on promoting sporting and institutional advancement, reinforcing its foundations, and continuing to invest in emerging talent,” Cornella further elaborated.
“This initiative is driven by a long-term vision and a strategic plan that intertwines ambition, sustainability, and a deep commitment to the local community.”
