Queensland legend Sam Thaiday has made a bold statement as the State of Origin series approaches, advocating for a promising Cowboys player who has had his fair share of bad luck to be considered for selection.
Thaiday, who earned 29 caps for the Maroons and contributed to their incredible eight consecutive series victories, has firmly secured his place in Origin history.
While he is now often seen rallying behind the Broncos, he has recently taken notice of a standout player from a rival team.

Thaiday, speaking on this week’s episode of Wide World Of Sports’ QLDER, named a young talent he believes is “on the verge of receiving a call” from coach Billy Slater next month.
“After taking a closer look from the stands during the game against the Broncos, I believe Tom Chester is in line to be a part of Queensland’s State of Origin squad this year,” he stated.
“As a centre, he’s performed impressively. Robert Toia and Gehamat Shibasaki are the current players in that position, but Chester’s performances this season have been outstanding.

“He has been one of the most effective backs for the Cowboys and, during the big match in front of a packed Suncorp Stadium against Brisbane, he really delivered.
“He could be on the verge of a call from Billy Slater.”
Chester was previously regarded as one of the brightest prospects for North Queensland, having made his debut in 2022 amid high expectations for a successful NRL career ahead.
However, his path has been marred by serious injuries, suffering an ACL rupture in both 2023 and 2024, which restricted him to only twelve appearances.

However, since his comeback and securing a centre role this season under Todd Payten, Chester has been showcasing a rich vein of form.
In his five matches this year, Chester has already registered four line breaks, scored two tries, and averaged 184 running metres per game, contributing to the Cowboys’ ascent in the rankings.
Crucially for Origin considerations, Chester’s defensive efforts have also been admirable, with 80 tackles recorded across five games and just nine missed tackles.
Although he may be seen as a long shot for Slater’s squad, Chester’s prospects could be bolstered by the current lack of strong centre options.
“We don’t have a great deal of depth in that position, so selectors are consistently scouting for emerging talents,” remarked Nine reporter Adam Jackson.

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is likely to secure a centre spot, but the second position remains uncertain.
Toia seems to be the leading candidate following an impressive debut series for the Maroons, while Shibasaki, AJ Brimson, and Jaxon Purdue are also in contention.
Chester’s versatility to play across the backline could make him a valuable inclusion for the six-man bench if his form continues to shine in the upcoming weeks.
The series is set to commence on Wednesday, May 27 at Accor Stadium.
