Queensland legend Sam Thaiday has made an audacious suggestion as we approach this year’s State of Origin series, advocating for an unlucky star from the Cowboys to be considered for selection.
Having played 29 matches for the Maroons and been part of the team’s impressive eight consecutive series victories, Thaiday has cemented his legacy in Origin history.
Although he now devotes much of his time to supporting the Broncos, a player from a rival team has definitely piqued his interest.

During a recent episode of Wide World Of Sports’ QLDER, Thaiday shared thoughts on a young contender who might soon receive a call-up from coach Billy Slater.
“Having watched from the stands this past weekend when he faced the Broncos, I’m convinced Tom Chester will find himself in the mix for Queensland’s State of Origin squad this year,” he remarked.
“As a centre, his performance has been commendable. With Robert Toia and Gehamat Shibasaki currently in pole position, Chester’s form this season has been very impressive.

“His contributions have placed him among the top backs for the Cowboys, especially in a high-stakes match at Suncorp Stadium [against Brisbane] where he truly excelled.
“He could very well be awaiting that phone call from Billy Slater.”
Chester, once one of North Queensland’s promising young talents, appeared set for an NRL breakthrough when he made his debut in 2022.
This skilled backline player has battled through a series of injuries that included ACL tears in 2023 and 2024, restricting him to just a mere twelve appearances.

Nevertheless, upon his return and establishing himself as a centre in Todd Payten’s squad this season, Chester has found a strong rhythm.
In his five outings this year, he has recorded four linebreaks, scored two tries, and averaged an impressive 184 running metres each match while the Cowboys climb up the standings.
More significantly in the context of Origin selection, Chester’s defensive capabilities stand out; he has made 80 tackles over five games while missing only nine.
While he may seem like a long shot for Slater’s squad, Chester’s potential is bolstered by a current shortage of promising centre options.
“That’s a position with limited depth, so they’re always scouting for emerging centres,” stated Nine reporter Adam Jackson.

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is expected to secure one centre position, while the other remains uncertain.
Toia serves as the likely frontrunner following a remarkable debut series for the Maroons, with contenders like Shibasaki, AJ Brimson, and Jaxon Purdue also considered.
If his current form persists in the upcoming weeks, Chester’s versatility to play across the backline could position him as a solid bench option.
The series is set to commence on Wednesday, May 27 at Accor Stadium.
