Atletico Madrid welcomes Barcelona to a packed Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday for their Champions League quarter-final second leg, as they seek to clinch a semi-final spot for the first time in nine years, before shifting focus to the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad.
After securing a 2-0 win in the first leg at Camp Nou, Atletico’s captain Koke, who came through the academy and featured in the Champions League finals of 2014 and 2016—both times after defeating Barcelona in the quarter-finals—recognises the significance of this week.
“This match clearly has the potential to become part of our club’s history,” Koke stated at a press conference on Monday. “Making it to the semi-finals again after so many years would be phenomenal, but our focus remains solely on this game—it’s a final for us.”
Reflecting on the goal he scored against Barcelona in 2014 that saw them eliminated, Koke, 33, shared, “I’ve replayed it in my mind multiple times. Matches like this stir up those memories and motivate you.”

While Atletico’s cup performances this season have been impressive, their LaLiga campaign has struggled. Having suffered three straight defeats to Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla, their title ambitions appear dashed, although manager Simeone has rotated his squad heavily in those contests to prioritise cup competitions.
Barcelona sits atop the league table with 79 points, nine ahead of Real Madrid. Villarreal comes in third with 61 points, followed by Atletico in fourth with 57, leading Real Betis by eleven points with seven matches left and a Champions League spot nearly secured for next season.
Facing a two-goal deficit, Barcelona travels to a venue where Atletico have only lost thrice across all competitions this season, with none of those defeats exceeding a single goal margin.
“It’s understandable that they’re feeling optimistic. However, my teammates are absolutely fired up—they respect the opposition, but they’re set on winning the match,” Koke expressed. “Barcelona are a team that can suffocate you and apply pressure, so we must show the character to maintain possession.”
Atletico are chasing their first domestic cup triumph since 2013 against Sociedad this Saturday.
