After the first leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final between Porto and Nottingham Forest ended in a 1-1 stalemate, both teams will be eager to secure a spot in the next round. The outcome marked yet another disappointment for the Portuguese side, extending their dismal record against English clubs to just two victories out of their last 15 encounters.
A significantly rotated Nottingham Forest lineup aimed to hold their own against Porto, but their tactical changes nearly backfired within the opening five minutes.
The best chance early on fell to Terem Moffi, who found himself one-on-one with Forest’s keeper, Stefan Ortega. However, he fired directly at him, and Borja Sainz’s follow-up was also thwarted.
Porto’s relentless pressure was evident in the early stages, and it paid off when Gabri Veiga delivered a ball across the six-yard box, allowing William Gomes to slot it into an unguarded net at the far post.
However, a bizarre moment moments later brought Forest back level. Martim Fernandes misjudged a 40-yard back pass, sending it careening past Diogo Costa and into the net.
Fernandes’ misfortune compounded as he had to be substituted due to injury shortly thereafter. Following a frantic start, the remainder of the first half saw few clear-cut opportunities, though Moffi should have put Porto ahead just before the break, sending a header straight into Ortega’s grateful hands.
Forest made tactical adjustments at half-time, but it was Porto’s Gomes who nearly broke the deadlock shortly after the restart, cutting in from the right and sending a shot narrowly past the near post.
Forest had a legitimate grievance shortly after the hour mark when they believed they had taken the lead. Igor Jesus and Porto goalkeeper Costa collided in the box, leaving the latter on the turf as Jesus scored. However, after a lengthy VAR review, it was deemed that Jesus had fouled Costa, and the goal was disallowed.
In the closing stages, two Porto substitutes nearly set up a match-winning goal. Pepe’s clever pass found the unmarked Victor Froholdt in the area, but he could only steer his effort wide of the target.
As it stands, the tie hangs in a delicate balance after a first-leg draw, a result that likely favours Forest, especially considering their previous victory over Porto at the City Ground this season.
