Bayern Munich’s manager Vincent Kompany praised goalkeeper Manuel Neuer following his team’s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday evening.
With goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane, the Bundesliga leaders established a commanding lead thanks to a dominant display, although Kylian Mbappe managed to pull one back for Madrid. Neuer was pivotal, making numerous impressive saves to prevent the record 15-time champions from finding their rhythm.
The experienced goalkeeper repelled the competition’s leading scorer, Mbappe, on several occasions and was subsequently named man of the match.
“If he’s deemed the standout player, then I’m all for that; it’s not an issue,” Kompany remarked to the press.
“You always need exceptional performances at this level in these types of matches.
“I believe we also had several opportunities to add to our goal tally, so let’s hope we maintain this form in the return leg next week, and fingers crossed our strikers shine as the best players then.”
Kompany commended Neuer’s remarkable longevity, who has two Champions League titles and 12 Bundesliga championships to his name.
“Manu is among the very few who not only manages to sustain this level for a significant period but does so exceptionally well,” the Belgian coach said.
“To perform as he does currently is something that not many goalkeepers, even the very best, can achieve.”
Despite Mbappe’s goal in the 74th minute, Kompany expressed satisfaction with the outcome as his team looks forward to the second leg next Wednesday.
“We’re pleased with the result. A victory at the Bernabeu in Madrid is a significant achievement,” Kompany added.
“This is a foundation we can build upon. We’ll be playing at home for the next match, so naturally, we respect the quality of Real Madrid…
“It’s only expected they will create some moments of danger; they were incredibly threatening at times. However, what’s crucial is that we also remained a threat, so our intention for the home match is to go all out for the win.”
