The iconic figure in football, Mircea Lucescu, sadly passed away on Tuesday, 7 April, at the age of 80.
The announcement of Mircea Lucescu’s passing was made on Tuesday by the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital (SUUB).
“The Bucharest University Emergency Hospital confirms that on Tuesday, 7 April 2026, at approximately 8:30 PM, Mr. Mircea Lucescu was pronounced deceased.”
“Mr. Lucescu holds the distinction of being one of Romania’s most celebrated football coaches and players, being the first to guide the national side to qualify for a European Championship in 1984.”
“He has been a national icon for generations of Romanians, and his legacy will forever remain in our hearts. May he rest in peace!” stated SUUB.
Lucescu was admitted to the Bucharest University Hospital on 29 March after experiencing health issues during a technical meeting prior to a training session with the national football squad.
His situation deteriorated on Sunday, 5 April, leading medical personnel to move him to the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he was placed in an induced coma.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital provided an update regarding Lucescu’s medical condition.
The medical team reported that a CT scan revealed “multiple indications of cerebral ischemic strokes along with areas of pulmonary thromboembolism.”
