The football world mourns the loss of legendary former player and coach Mircea Lucescu, who passed away on Tuesday, April 7, at the age of 80. Lucescu’s last role was as the head coach of the Romanian national team.
Mircea Lucescu’s death was confirmed on Tuesday by the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital (SUUB).
“The Bucharest University Emergency Hospital announces that at approximately 8:30 PM today, April 7, 2026, Mr. Mircea Lucescu was pronounced dead.”
“Mr. Mircea Lucescu was among the most celebrated coaches and players in Romania, notably the first to guide the national team to a European Championship qualification in 1984.”
“Generations of Romanians cherished him as a national emblem. May he rest in peace!” the SUUB statement read.
Lucescu was admitted to Bucharest University Hospital in an emergency on March 29 after falling ill during a technical briefing ahead of a training session with the national team.
Following his hospitalisation, Lucescu stepped down as the head coach of Romania on April 2.
His health deteriorated on Sunday (April 5), necessitating a transfer to the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he was placed in an induced coma.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital provided an update on Lucescu’s condition.
Medical professionals announced that after conducting a CT scan, they found “multiple signs of cerebral ischemic strokes and areas of pulmonary thromboembolism.”
