Alexander Isak has been named in Liverpool’s squad for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, marking the Sweden striker’s return from a significant injury layoff.
Since his record-setting transfer from Newcastle last year, Isak has only managed to make 16 appearances for Liverpool, hampered by a series of persistent fitness setbacks.
His injury troubles began in December when he was forced off the pitch due to a tackle from Micky van de Ven while netting the opening goal in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham. This resulted in surgery for an ankle issue that included a fibula fracture.
After spending 15 weeks recovering, the 26-year-old is now poised to make his return for Liverpool.
“Alexander Isak was among the players who left John Lennon Airport for Paris this afternoon, gearing up for Wednesday night’s quarter-final first leg at Parc des Princes,” Liverpool confirmed on their official website.
Having returned to group training last Thursday, Isak participated in a session with his teammates on Tuesday morning before heading off to France.
The squad has certainly missed Isak, and his inclusion in the 21-man travelling party could provide a significant lift for Arne Slot’s struggling team.
After suffering a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, the pressure is intensifying on Slot and his squad.
Liverpool currently find themselves in fifth place in the Premier League, with the Champions League being their sole opportunity for silverware this season.
The Reds experienced a penalty shootout exit against PSG in the last 16 of the Champions League back in 2025.
