U.S. striker Patrick Agyemang has sustained an Achilles tendon injury, ruling him out of the World Cup, as confirmed by his English club, Derby County, on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old suffered the injury during the first half of Derby’s 2-0 victory against Stoke City in the Championship on Monday and had to be carried off on a stretcher.
“The club is committed to providing Patrick with the highest standard of medical care and rehabilitation as he works towards recovery,” the statement from the club read.
“Regrettably, due to this injury, Patrick will miss this summer’s FIFA World Cup. It would be premature to estimate a timeline for his recovery at this point.”
Agyemang has netted six goals in 14 appearances for the U.S. since making his debut last year, featuring in both of the team’s friendlies during the March international break.
U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino must finalise his World Cup squad by May 30. The U.S. will co-host the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico, facing Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey in Group D.
The World Cup is scheduled to kick off on June 11.
