PSV Eindhoven, the Dutch football giants, have clinched the Eredivisie title for the third year in a row and celebrated their 27th championship overall. This achievement followed Feyenoord’s inability to secure a victory against FC Volendam on Sunday, rendering PSV’s commanding 17-point advantage unattainable for their competitors.
In an electrifying match, PSV triumphed over FC Utrecht with a score of 4-3, bringing Peter Bosz’s team a significant step closer to the crown.
To secure the title this weekend, PSV required Feyenoord to falter in their away match against FC Volendam, a team that had previously defeated PSV in February. Manager Robin van Persie’s Feyenoord obliged by playing out a 0-0 draw in Volendam, consequently crowning the Eindhoven club champions for the 27th time.
Even had Feyenoord won on Sunday, PSV’s lead would have been 15 points, with five matches left to play. Moreover, PSV held a superior goal difference, boasting +42 compared to Feyenoord’s +22 at the very least.
Season Highlights
PSV demonstrated their prowess from the outset of the season, securing an impressive 15 victories out of 17 matches in the first half of the 2025/26 season, which left them with an 11-point cushion at the midpoint.
From September 27th to January 17th, PSV remained unbeaten, setting a new Eredivisie record for consecutive away victories with 14, enabling them to build a 16-point lead and allowing fans to start planning their championship celebrations.
As Feyenoord and Ajax faltered, PSV capitalised on the situation, defeating Feyenoord 3-0 on February 1st and significantly diminishing the competition’s chances of reclaiming the title.
After being eliminated from the Dutch Cup semifinal in late February, PSV faced a setback when NEC Nijmegen pulled off an upset, beating them 3-2 in Eindhoven on March 14th, delaying their title celebrations by at least another week. A subsequent surprise defeat to Telstar added to their challenges.
Finally, on their third attempt, PSV hit the jackpot and became the earliest champions by date in Eredivisie history, surpassing their previous record established on April 8th, 1978.
A New Dynasty
PSV’s third consecutive Eredivisie title marks them as the first team to achieve three successive championships since Ajax managed this feat from 2019 to 2022 under Erik ten Hag’s management.
This is not the first time PSV have won three titles in a row, having previously done so twice. Under Jan Reker and Guus Hiddink, the club celebrated four consecutive titles between 1986 and 1989, following their historic triumph in the Europa Cup I. Between 2005 and 2008, they also claimed four consecutive league titles, with management from Sef Vergoossen, Ronald Koeman, and once again, Guus Hiddink.
