Getafe has finally secured a LaLiga home victory against Athletic Club after a seven-year wait, clinching a gritty 2-0 triumph at the Coliseum and reviving their aspirations for European football for the first time since the 2019/20 season.
Both teams entered the match equal on points, eager to gain ground in the competitive LaLiga race for European qualification, which may soon be enhanced by an additional UEFA Champions League spot.
The in-form hosts needed under 15 minutes to strike first, with Anderlecht loanee Luis Vazquez scoring, albeit in a rather fortuitous manner.
The Argentine’s initial header was thwarted by Unai Simon, but the alert Martin Satriano was on hand to steer the ensuing rebound off his fellow winter recruit, granting Vazquez his third goal for the Azulones.
Alex Berenguer had a golden opportunity to level the scores from Gorka Guruzeta’s deep cross before the half-hour mark, but he could only send his diving header wide in what was Athletic’s most significant chance of a tightly contested opening half.
Unhappy with his side’s first-half performance, visiting manager Ernesto Valverde—who will depart his position at the season’s end—brought on the attacking flair of Nico Williams in hopes of instigating a turnaround. However, it was the home side that turned the screw immediately after the break, with Adrián Liso forcing a solid stop from Simon with a well-struck shot.
Jose Bordalas’ determined side then shifted focus to maintaining their lead, allowing Athletic to enjoy more possession while their resolute back five focused on protecting their area.

While the performance wasn’t aesthetically pleasing, it proved to be an effective strategy, as the team boasting the league’s fourth best defensive record mitigated the opposition’s attacking threat before doubling their lead with a rare offensive venture.
Satriano was present at the far post to finish from Mario Martin’s low delivery, bringing Getafe within four points of the top five, while Los Leones remain anchored in 10th position.
