Cooper Connolly made a stunning entrance into the Indian Premier League, finishing with an unbeaten half-century that played a crucial role in Punjab Kings’ three-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans.
The 22-year-old, batting at No. 3, amassed 72 runs off 44 deliveries, featuring five sixes and five fours, allowing last year’s finalists to recover from a mid-innings collapse and notch a total of 7-165 with just five balls remaining.
Earlier, fast bowler Vijayakumar Vyshak (3-34) and the seasoned spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (2-28) excelled during the middle overs, helping to keep Gujarat to a score of 6-162 after Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer chose to field following the toss.
“I was excited to experience playing alongside world-class talent, and to deliver that performance tonight is truly satisfying,” Connolly remarked.
“I consider myself more of a tempo player; I try to gauge how my hands are flowing and don’t often go for massive sixes.”

Connolly’s performance drew praise from teammates and analysts alike.
“Cooper Connolly delivered an exceptional innings,” said Iyer in the post-match conference.
“The range of shots he played was simply remarkable. His approach against Rashid Khan was especially impressive. He possesses a fantastic mindset for high-pressure situations.”
Punjab’s head coach Ricky Ponting chimed in: “There was a moment I felt a bit anxious as the match tightened, and it seemed to be slipping away from us. But Cooper’s innings was exceptional, and he played beautifully to secure the win for the team.”
“I’m feeling much more relieved now,” he concluded.
“What a debut!” commented former Australian women’s captain Lisa Sthalekar on X.
“Maintaining composure and calmness throughout the innings shows incredible maturity, which is why he is highly regarded in Australia.”
Punjab had a solid grip on the chase at 2-110 after 12 overs, but a successful impact substitute in Prasidh Krishna caused chaos by taking three wickets in just ten deliveries, leaving the home side at 6-118 in the 15th over.
Despite the tumbling wickets, Connolly remained steadfast, ensuring Punjab got their tournament off to a flying start.
Krishna instigated the collapse when Iyer, after receiving treatment for a hand injury from a powerful drive off Connolly, sent a straightforward catch to mid-wicket off the very first ball he faced.
Shashank Singh fell to a sharp short ball, edging it behind, while Marcus Stoinis sliced a catch to Rashid Khan at third during another short delivery.
Marco Jansen struck a six but was deceived by a slower ball from debutant Ashok Sharma, resulting in a soft catch at cover when Punjab still required 19 runs for victory.

Aussie fast bowler Xavier Bartlett, with 11 runs not out, calmed the nerves by launching Krishna for a six over mid-wicket, paving the way for Connolly to steer Punjab to triumph.
Earlier in the innings, skipper Shubman Gill was the leading scorer with 39 runs off 27 balls, yet none of the top-order Gujarat batsmen could convert their promising starts into substantial innings. Gill began with fluent boundaries during the powerplay, but Gujarat struggled to score once they reached 1-54 in the initial six overs.
Gill demonstrated mastery against Chahal with his signature sweep shots, but his innings ended when he was caught at mid-wicket attempting another sweep against the spinner, causing Gujarat to lose momentum following the powerplay.
Jos Buttler contributed a total of 38 runs off 33 balls but faced 14 dot balls before getting caught at long-on at the beginning of the final overs.
Punjab performed admirably in the last five overs, limiting Gujarat to just 34 runs as Jansen (1-20) expertly varied his pace. Arshdeep Singh (0-42) had a difficult last over that went for 12 runs, including a no-ball and four wides.
