Viktor Gyökeres’ dramatic late strike secured Sweden’s place at this summer’s FIFA World Cup in North America, as Graham Potter’s squad triumphed over Poland with a 3-2 victory at Strawberry Arena in Solna, avenging their qualification play-off loss to the Orły in 2022.
Poland started with early aggression, as Matty Cash had his ambitious attempt blocked. However, with so much on the line, both teams struggled to find their rhythm, and Cash later completely missed the target with his next effort.
It was Sweden, however, that created the first significant chance in the 20th minute, making it count when Yasin Ayari cleverly flicked Gabriel Gudmundsson’s pass into Anthony Elanga’s path, allowing the winger to unleash a powerful strike that hit the crossbar before soaring into the net.
Cash’s cross found Karol Swiderski in the area as the visitors sought to respond, but Kristoffer Nordfeldt made a brilliant save, palming his volley away.
Nonetheless, the Swedish goalkeeper was beaten in the 33rd minute when Nicola Zalewski cut inside to unleash a shot that slipped past Nordfeldt, despite him getting a hand on it.
However, it was Zalewski’s moment of distraction before half-time that proved costly, as he committed a needless foul on Elanga. Benjamin Nygren then floated in a tempting cross from the resultant free-kick, which Gustaf Lagerbielke headed past Kamil Grabara for his second goal on the international stage.
Poland managed to muster one more opportunity before the interval when Jakub Kaminski was freed with a ball over the top, but his shot was saved by Nordfeldt’s outstretched boot.
After the break, Lagerbielke went close with another header, but Poland equalised within just ten minutes of the second half. Cash’s initial delivery was flicked on by Kaminski, and Zalewski nudged it back across the goal for Swiderski to tap in with ease.
There was also a brief moment of confusion between Nordfeldt and Carl Starfelt, but the keeper managed to intervene and avert any further drama.
Kaminski then saw a shot blocked by Gyökeres, and the resulting corner was awkwardly dealt with by Victor Lindelöf as Poland continued to press for another goal.
Ultimately, it was Sweden who erupted in joyous celebration in the 88th minute after a late push for the decisive goal.
Grabara made impressive saves to thwart Ayari and Lucas Bergvall, but he was powerless to stop Besfort Zeneli’s shot that struck the post, allowing Gyökeres to pounce on the rebound ahead of Przemysław Wisniewski to score.
This goal proved the match-winner as Sweden held on for a 3-2 victory, capitalising on the play-off place they had secured through the UEFA Nations League. They will return to the World Cup finals for the first time since 2018, despite having failed to win a single match in their qualification group.
In stark contrast, Poland’s first defeat in eight outings means they will miss out on the finals, having qualified for the last two tournaments. Sweden finds themselves in Group F for the World Cup, where they will take on the Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia.
