Phil Gould, general manager of the Canterbury Bulldogs, hasn’t entirely dismissed the prospect of pursuing Lachlan Galvin in the future. He remarked on the situation, stating it’s “extraordinary” that the young five-eighth is leaving due to concerns about Benji Marshall’s coaching capabilities.
Following the announcement on Monday morning that Galvin would not be accepting a lucrative contract offer from the Tigers, reports surfaced indicating that the 19-year-old lacks faith in Marshall’s ability to optimise his performance.
As speculation mounts, attention turns to the Tigers’ future prospects, particularly with potential successor Latu Fainu currently sidelined due to injury.
The Tigers have stated that Galvin, contracted until the end of 2026, will not be permitted to leave prematurely, nor will he be allowed to negotiate with other clubs before November 1.

Gould commented on the situation surrounding Marshall and Galvin, labelling it “extraordinary”.
“I would have thought that this would have been a private matter between the management and the player,” he stated on Nine’s 100% Footy.
“I find that quite astonishing and somewhat untenable if Lachlan Galvin comes out and backs that claim. Honestly, I doubt that he will. I don’t think he would want to associate himself with comments suggesting the current coach cannot enhance his football.”
“Lachlan doesn’t seem the type to lend his name to such remarks, especially at this stage in his career when making such statements might well be a tactic from his management to facilitate his exit from the club… it’s not a positive situation.”

With Galvin’s imminent departure from the Tigers, discussions now revolve around his next destination.
The Bulldogs are among those linked in the speculation, and Gould was asked point-blank on his show about their interest.
His response was not a definitive ‘no’.
“We have other plans in place at the Bulldogs. We’re nurturing young talent through our pathway system. I never imagined that a player like Lachlan Galvin would ever become available,” he remarked.
“We have promising youngsters at the ’embryo’ stage of their careers that we are focused on developing. It’s not a discussion that can be addressed right now, especially since he won’t be available for another 18 months. Plenty can change between now and then, but I’d advise him, his management, and his parents to ensure he is the best 22-year-old player he can be. Typically, your career doesn’t truly kick off until you’re in your mid-20s.”

As Galvin navigates these developments, he must also consider how his teammates might react.
Fonua Pole recently liked an Instagram post from a Tigers fan page that was critical of Galvin, indicating that tensions may be brewing within the squad.
League legend Cameron Smith commented on the situation, suggesting that Galvin’s time with the Tigers may be drawing to a close sooner rather than later.
“During my career, if a player spoke up about such matters, I would be inclined to allow them to move on. I want players in my club who genuinely want to be there and make a difference,” Smith said. “If the Tigers find a viable replacement for Lachlan, I can see him not being part of the team next year. I really hope that’s the case for both him and Wests Tigers.”
