Starting from kick-off in the 2-2 stalemate, Segecic, who has been frequently used as a substitute by coach Ufuk Talay this season, has certainly made his minutes count—his impressive tally of 12 goals has come in just over 1,000 minutes of play. In contrast, fellow Golden Boot rival Archie Goodwin has achieved the same number of goals but across more than 1,300 minutes.
Throughout this season, Segecic has taken to the pitch as a substitute in 11 of his 22 game appearances, prompting former A-League stars Alex Brosque and Roy O’Donovan to question why Talay hasn’t started him more frequently.
“As Harper (co-commentator Andy Harper) mentioned, it’s ‘The Segecic Show’,” Brosque remarked during half-time in the thrilling 2-2 draw against Auckland on Saturday night.
“What he accomplished with those first two goals was extraordinary; the composure and confidence he exhibited was exceptional.”
“He (Harper) noted after one of his goals: no one can hold him back right now, and he’s spot on.”
“I genuinely believe he should be starting every match,” O’Donovan commented. “There’s no justification for him not to be.”
“He scores goals like that, leaving you wondering: how can you possibly leave him out? His strikes are so precise; he’s a player bursting with confidence.”
Brosque responded: “It’s a tricky situation. Time and again, he’s come off the bench to effect the game and score crucial goals. Harsh as it may be, he’s partially done this to himself.”
“Uffie knows he can count on him to make a difference when required, bringing in that spark of quality.”
