The Repco Supercars Championship’s inaugural trip to New Zealand’s South Island left spectators with cherished memories from three thrilling days of racing at Ruapuna Raceway.
The first-ever Christchurch Super 440 weekend was packed with significant moments and milestones, kicking off with the opening race on Friday.
The first of four races was clinched by the promising young talent Kai Allen, who celebrated his first victory after 47 starts. This win came just a week after fellow Kiwi Ryan Wood achieved his maiden Supercars triumph, showcasing a thrilling fortnight for the sport’s up-and-coming stars.
The 20-year-old opted for a bold strategy during his compulsory pit stop, choosing to take only two tyres. This clever move allowed him to leapfrog the competition, before he successfully held off intense pressure from Brodie Kostecki and Wood.

Despite an early incident that saw David Reynolds exit during the opening lap of his 500th career race, Allen maintained his composure, making history as the first Supercars victor on the South Island.
Kostecki responded vigorously on Saturday, dominating Race 11 to secure his fifth win of the season, thereby bolstering his championship momentum. However, pit lane trouble prevented Matt Payne from seizing a probable victory when a loose wheel thwarted his efforts.
Not to be deterred, Payne impressed in Race 12, turning his frustration into triumph before an enthusiastic local crowd.
The Kiwi ace led the race from start to finish, finishing comfortably ahead of Broc Feeney and James Golding, marking himself as the sixth different race winner of the season.
The finale on Sunday saw Payne complete a remarkable turnaround, leading Grove Racing to a historic one-two finish with Allen trailing close behind.

Nevertheless, Feeney’s third-place finish was pivotal, propelling him to the championship lead and securing the prestigious Jason Richards Memorial Trophy (awarded for the combined points from the Taupō and Christchurch rounds) following late dramas for Wood and a significant incident involving Kostecki.
Supercars announced an impressive total attendance of over 65,000 fans across the three-day event.
