Rising tennis star João Fonseca disappointed his home crowd at the Rio Open with a first-round defeat on Wednesday (AEDT), just two days after clinching his inaugural ATP title.
The 18-year-old arrived at the Quadra Guga Kuerten accompanied by a dog to a warm welcome but was ultimately outmatched by world No.60 Alexandre Muller.
Fonseca succumbed to Muller with a scoreline of 6-1, 7-6 (4), tallying 34 unforced errors and seeming fatigued throughout the encounter.

The Brazilian secured his first ATP title at the prestigious Argentina Open.
Muller is set to face Argentina’s Tomás Martin Etcheverry in his next match.
“It was challenging to compete against such a talented player in front of maybe 5,000 fans, but I’m really pleased with the win today,” Muller stated. “I felt composed for half of the match. I missed out on opportunities to break his serve in the second set, and he started to find his rhythm. I managed to play a strong tie-break at the end.”
After the match, Fonseca acknowledged that the pressure of expectation affected his performance.
“I was aware I’d be nervous, facing the fear of playing in front of so many people,” he said in Portuguese.
“I gave it my everything to confront the moment, but I couldn’t manage; it’s part of the sport. It’s about learning from these experiences to grow stronger.
“I’ll be upset tonight, but tomorrow I have a day off, and on Thursday, it’s back to practice. The season is long, and so is my career. We live and learn.
“Physically, I felt 100 per cent. Today was purely a mental challenge.”
Over the weekend, Fonseca became the first man born in 2006 or later to capture an ATP singles title, marking him as the 10th youngest champion in ATP Tour history and the youngest South American to win a title since the ATP Tour’s inception in 1990.
Last year, the promising talent reached the quarter-finals at the Rio tournament, an ATP 500 event, and wrapped up the year by winning the Next Gen ATP Finals in December.
Following his triumph in Buenos Aires, he climbed 31 places to rank No. 68 in this week’s standings.
