Assane Diao, at just 19 years of age, was pivotal in helping Como snap their three-match losing streak in Serie A, as he netted the opener in a 2-0 triumph over ACF Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
Fiorentina started the match with a flourish, marking their first Serie A encounter against Como since 1989, and nearly broke the deadlock with a close-range effort from Robin Gosens.
La Viola appeared to dominate the early phases of the match; however, it was Como who almost got their noses in front after 21 minutes when Maxence Caqueret set up Diao, forcing David de Gea into a brilliant near-post save.
As the first half progressed, Como began to assert themselves, with Diao emerging as a significant threat, only to be thwarted by a crucial last-gasp tackle from Marin Pongracic that stopped him from unleashing a shot inside the area.
Yet, just four minutes shy of half-time, Diao made his mark during a rapid counterattack, executing a deft finish past the wrong-footed De Gea after a dazzling solo run.
The home side’s streak against Como, having conquered them in their last four encounters without conceding, now hung in the balance.
Looking for a renewed spark after the break, Raffaele Palladino opted to introduce two substitutes just ten minutes into the second half, but clear-cut opportunities remained elusive.
Matters took a turn for the worse for the pre-match favourites when they found themselves trailing 2-0, courtesy of a tidy touch and a powerful effort in off the post from Nico Paz — marking his first away goal of the season.
As the clock wound down, Fiorentina sought to mount a comeback, but a weak header from Michael Folorunsho was the closest they came as Como comfortably secured three vital points.
Cesc Fabregas will be pleased with Como’s first clean sheet on the road this season, allowing them to extend their lead over the relegation zone, now sitting five points clear in 13th place.
On the flip side, two consecutive defeats for Palladino’s squad have dampened Fiorentina’s aspirations, leaving them in sixth position.
La Viola remains in the European qualification spots for now, although they have played one more match than AC Milan and Bologna, who are just a point behind.
