In a remarkable turnaround, Kaizer Chiefs have discovered their scoring prowess, netting 11 goals across their last four Betway Premiership games, averaging close to three goals per match.
This shift comes as a relief to fans who had been left feeling frustrated by the team’s earlier struggles to find the net, despite generally commanding play throughout the season.
With striker Flavio Silva at the helm, supported by winger Glody Lilepo and the promising talents of Mduduzi Shabalala and Wandile Duba, the goals have started to flow.
This week, Silva remarked that while he may not be on par with “Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo”, he can score given the right opportunities, a claim that has been validated as he finds the back of the net.
He has demonstrated exceptional finishing skill this week, delivering the poacher’s goals that have been sorely missed in recent seasons—a player capable of lurking around the six-yard box to convert chances.
So, where have the goals been coming from this season? The Chiefs have tallied 28 in the league (from 23 games), one in the Nedbank Cup, and 11 in the CAF Confederation Cup. They did not compete in the MTN8 and had a goalless outing against Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout, where they were eliminated in the first round after a penalty shootout.
Silva has contributed nine of those 40 goals, making up nearly a quarter of their total, and he leads the attack with seven goals in the Betway Premiership, plus one each in the Nedbank Cup and Confederation Cup.
Lilepo particularly thrived in continental play, scoring four times in the CAF tournament—the most for the Chiefs—alongside another four in the league, bringing his season tally to eight.
Midfielder Shabalala is next on the goalscoring ranks, with all five of his goals scored in league matches.
Duba is finding his rhythm again, with three league goals coming in his last four matches as he approaches the season’s end in fine form.
Khanyisa Mayo’s strike against Magesi FC on Wednesday night marked his first goal since September, making it two for the season, while Siphesihle Ndlovu, Vilakazi, and Aden McCarthy are the other players who have scored more than once.
Kaizer Chiefs will be back in action on Saturday against Polokwane City.
