Kaizer Chiefs have recently discovered their scoring touch, netting an impressive total of 11 goals across their last four Betway Premiership encounters, averaging nearly three strikes per game.
This improvement is a breath of fresh air for supporters, who had been growing increasingly frustrated with the team’s lack of finishing ability this season, despite dominating possession in many matches.
Thanks to the efforts of striker Flavio Silva, winger Glody Lilepo, and emerging talents Mduduzi Shabalala and Wandile Duba, the team has found its rhythm in front of goal.
This week, Silva acknowledged that while he may not be on the same level as “Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo”, he possesses the ability to find the net given appropriate service, and his claims have been validated.
He showcased his prowess with some classic ‘poacher’s finishes’ this week, a skill that Chiefs have sorely missed in recent years—a player adept at lurking around the six-yard box and finding the back of the net.
So where have the goals come from this season? The Chiefs have scored a total of 28 in league play (out of 23 matches), added one in the Nedbank Cup, and tallied 11 in the CAF Confederation Cup. They did not qualify for the MTN8 and suffered a goalless draw with Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout, where they were eliminated on penalties.
Silva has contributed nine of those 40 goals, making up nearly a quarter of their total, and is the team’s top scorer. Seven of those goals have been netted in the Betway Premiership, with an additional one each in the Nedbank and Confederation Cups.
Lilepo has particularly shone in continental competition, scoring four times, the highest for the Chiefs in that event, alongside four league goals, bringing his season tally to eight.
Midfielder Shabalala stands third on the goalscoring chart, with all five of his strikes coming in league play.
Duba is regaining his scoring touch, having netted three league goals, all in his last four outings as he finishes the season strongly.
Khanyisa Mayo found the net against Magesi FC on Wednesday, marking his first goal since September and his second of the season, while the only other players to score multiple times are Siphesihle Ndlovu, Vilakazi, and Aden McCarthy.
Chiefs will be back in action this Saturday against Polokwane City.
