Wellington Phoenix clinched their spot in the semi-finals following a 2-0 victory against Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium.
The opening goal came from Brooke Nunn’s precise cross, which was expertly headed home by Marisa Van der Meer. Just moments later, Van der Meer doubled the score with another header, putting Phoenix ahead as early as the 35-minute mark.
This win ensures that Wellington Phoenix finishes the regular season in second place, pulling three points clear of Canberra in third place, with a significant goal difference advantage of 14. Meanwhile, Adelaide United remains in fourth, but they risk dropping to sixth, thus losing their home advantage in the playoffs, should both Central Coast and Brisbane secure victories this weekend.
Thirteen minutes into the game, Wellington finally broke the deadlock after attempting a corner routine multiple times. Finding space on the edge, Brooke Nunn floated a cross towards the back post, which Marisa Van der Meer met with a commendable header that found its way past Claudia Jenkins.
Jenkins soon found herself in action again, skillfully saving a quick attempt from Makala Woods.
Following this, the very next corner saw Manaia Elliott’s outswinger locate Nunn, positioning herself at the front of a crowded penalty area. Nunn managed to direct her header into the net, swiftly putting the Phoenix two goals up in just four minutes.
Nunn nearly topped off her impressive performance with another goal in the closing moments when her shot, threading through a sea of defenders, struck the post before being cleared away.
