The Turkish Super Lig title race experienced a shift as Trabzonspor triumphed over Galatasaray, while Fenerbahce narrowly defeated Besiktas during an exciting weekend of football.
Prior to the highly anticipated Trabzonspor vs Galatasaray match on Saturday, off-field controversy arose when Ugurcan Cakir – a former Trabzon captain now playing for Galatasaray – was subjected to intense criticism on social media by a minority of fans.
While some fan banter is commonplace, and jeering a former player is generally harmless, such incidents highlight ongoing issues that plague football, often crossing acceptable boundaries.
In typical Turkish football fashion, Trabzon’s management also accused Galatasaray of illicitly pursuing Ugurcan before his transfer this summer, alleging that the leaders of the league had poached Renato Nhaga from them, who was close to joining in January.

Once again, ludicrous events stole the limelight even before kick-off, reflecting cultural issues in Turkish football that often lead to outsiders chuckling at the Super Lig.
Now, let’s delve into the match itself.
With all this backdrop, Trabzon’s supporters were electrified, realising that a victory would bring them back into contention for the title, showcasing the exceptional job done by Fatih Tekke in his managerial role.
Galatasaray entered the match with a four-point lead, along with a game in hand, putting them in a very commanding position. A win would almost seal the title for them, while a loss would open the door for the chasing pack.
Trabzon surged out of the blocks with tremendous energy, applying pressure on Galatasaray.
They took an early lead, with Paul Onuachu – once again – heading home just four minutes in, marking his 22nd goal of the Super Lig season, six ahead of his nearest rival.
Galatasaray gradually found their rhythm, yet without Victor Osimhen, who will miss several matches due to an arm injury, they struggled to find quality or incisiveness in the final third, leaving Trabzon in a comfortable position.
Okan Buruk made two substitutions at half-time, hoping to turn the tide for Galatasaray. They were rewarded swiftly when Wilfried Singo sneaked into the back post to volley in Baris Alper Yilmaz’s cross shortly after the restart, marking the defender’s second goal in two league matches.
Galatasaray appeared to be gaining control, but Trabzon responded just after the hour mark. Anthony Nwakaeme delivered a delightful free-kick that Chibuike Nwaiwu converted with a superb header past Ugurcan.
The away team maintained possession and pressed for the remainder of the match, yet they could not manufacture any significant chances.
Mauro Icardi seemed a mere shadow of his former self, contributing hardly anything in comparison to Osimhen, alongside missing Gabriel Sara due to a minor injury.
Ultimately, Trabzon secured a vital 2-1 victory over the three-time defending champions, even without the likes of Ernest Muci, Arseniy Batagov, Christ Inao Oulai, or Edin Visca.
Following the match, more controversy arose when Abdulkerim Bardakci was shown a red card for an altercation with a Trabzonspor youth player who had come onto the field. Galatasaray allege the player insulted Abdulkerim, while Trabzon refutes this, claiming that Abdulkerim instigated the incident. A classic scenario.
This victory saw Trabzon move just a point behind Galatasaray at the top, even though they have played one game more. Despite having a significantly lower budget compared to the three Istanbul heavyweight clubs, they are solidly in the title race, earning huge praise for their efforts.
For Galatasaray, the performance was disappointing, revealing their heavy reliance on Osimhen. They missed him desperately, and their tactical approach seemed to unravel without him.
Nevertheless, they still remain in pole position. Their game in hand is against Goztepe on Wednesday, where a win could extend their lead by four points with six matches remaining. There’s no need for alarm just yet.
Fenerbahce Edges Past Besiktas
Following Galatasaray’s defeat, Fenerbahce had the opportunity to close the gap on the top two, provided they could triumph in their derby clash against Besiktas on Sunday.
Under Sergen Yalcin, Besiktas has been improving, aiming to rebuild and become title contenders for next season; however, their primary goal this season is merely to secure a European spot.
Fenerbahce displayed superior performance for large stretches of the contest, but their lack of a definitive striker was conspicuous. Without a focal point to hold the ball or be in the right place at the right time, they struggled.
As such, the game seemed destined for a 0-0 stalemate. In the final moments, Fenerbahce appeared to squander their opportunity, while Besiktas looked set to claim a precious point.
But then, surprise, surprise, controversy struck!
In the dying moments, Dorgeles Nene found himself charging towards goal, but a Besiktas defender was in pursuit. Emmanuel Agbadou decided to take a risky gamble, diving in an effort to win the ball.
Nene went down, resulting in a penalty being awarded.
Replays suggested Agbadou made contact with the ball first before clipping Nene. Whether he made sufficient contact with the ball remains a matter of debate. More crucially, the incident appeared to occur just outside the penalty area, making a foul on the edge more logical.
This was a tricky decision, and though I initially believed it wasn’t a penalty, I’m now less certain.
Nevertheless, Agbadou’s tackle was reckless. At that stage of the match, after working hard to earn a point, there was absolutely no need to give the referee a decision to make.
After a prolonged delay, Kerem Akturkoglu stepped up in the 11th minute of stoppage time and coolly dispatched the penalty, securing a critical 1-0 victory for his side.

This result propelled them to equal points with Trabzon, directly trailing Galatasaray, and they will be hoping for Goztepe to assist them with a favourable result on Wednesday.
It’s now a three-horse race for the title, ensuring thrilling viewing for neutral fans.
