Villarreal has effectively ensured their participation in the forthcoming UEFA Champions League by securing a 2-1 victory over Celta Vigo, marking their fifth consecutive home win for the first time in a decade. This result also means Celta has endured five defeats on the bounce across all competitions.
The match kicked off with drama as referee Alejandro Quintero Gonzalez awarded a penalty within the first 30 seconds. Alberto Moleiro darted into the Celta box and was brought down by Yoel Lago. Gerard Moreno confidently converted the penalty, finding the bottom corner and putting Villarreal ahead just two minutes into the game.
Celta attempted to respond and started to create chances around the 10-minute mark. Borja Iglesias played a central role in a scrappy goalmouth situation during a corner, and Pablo Duran sent a volley towards goal at another. However, these were the extent of Celta’s attacking efforts.
The home side doubled their lead shortly before the half-hour mark with only their second shot of the match. Alfonso Pedraza sprinted after a long ball down the left flank and delivered a cut-back to the edge of the area, where Moreno allowed it to roll for Nicolas Pepe, who skillfully struck the ball into the net at the first attempt past Ionut Radu.
Os Celestes finally tested Villarreal’s goalkeeper Arnau Tenas, who expertly denied Sergio Carreira’s chance and then reacted quickly to stop a Hugo Alvarez volley following a well-delivered cross from Oscar Mingueza just before half-time.
With only Barcelona and Real Madrid having racked up more away points than Celta, and 15 of their 21 away goals being scored in the second half, the match was far from over.
Alvarez sought to demonstrate this early in the second half but failed to find the target from a promising position. Radu then made a stunning double save to keep Celta in the game, denying both Georges Mikautadze and Pape Gueye just before the hour mark.
Just as Gueye appeared to have sealed the tie, he gave Claudio Giraldez’s team a glimmer of hope with a reckless foul on Iglesias in the box. Though Iglesias’s initial penalty was saved by Tenas, the referee ordered a retake for encroachment.
At his second attempt, Iglesias converted confidently, blasting the ball into the top corner.
Celta nearly completed a dramatic comeback with 10 minutes remaining when Ferran Jutgla headed Iago Aspas’s cross against the post.
Villarreal could have made the final minutes less nerve-wracking had Alfon not struck a volley too well, sending it straight into Radu’s arms. Nevertheless, Marcelino’s side managed to secure a significant 15-point gap from the fifth-placed team with five matches still to play.
Celta’s failure to secure points leaves them outside the European spots, marking their fifth consecutive loss at La Ceramica.
