Cagliari, currently battling in Serie A, pulled off a remarkable win against European contenders Atalanta BC with a score of 3-2 at Unipol Domus, achieving back-to-back home victories in the top tier for the first time in two seasons.
The hosts could not have asked for a more perfect start, taking the lead just 15 seconds into the match. Michel Adopo delivered a cross into the penalty area that was expertly headed in by Paul Mendy, marking his first start in Serie A.
A mere seven minutes later, Mendy was at it again, delivering a second goal that extended Cagliari’s lead.
After Atalanta struggled to clear a corner, Alessandro Deiola’s shot was saved by Marco Carnesecchi, but Mendy capitalised on the rebound. His effort deflected off the unfortunate Berat Djimsiti, guiding the ball into the net.

The visitors struggled to create chances during a lacklustre first half, but astonishingly managed to draw level within five minutes of the break.
Gianluca Scamacca expertly netted a right-footed shot into the far corner, reducing the deficit before quickly grabbing a second goal as he connected with Giorgio Scalvini’s low cross, leaving Cagliari and their fans stunned.

Despite being hindered by injuries, Mendy was substituted at half-time, missing the chance for a potential hat-trick on his debut. However, his replacement, Gennaro Borrelli, wasted no time in making his mark, scoring less than two minutes into the second half. Borrelli capitalised on a loose ball resulting from a blocked shot by Michael Folorunsho to restore Cagliari’s lead.
Having only managed one win in their previous ten league outings (with two draws and seven defeats), Cagliari showcased a revitalised determination to prevent Atalanta from staging a comeback. The visitors’ only significant moment in a dismal second half came eight minutes from the end when Elia Caprile made a superb save from Nikola Krstović’s attempt from inside the area.
The victory allows Cagliari to extend their cushion above the relegation zone to a solid eight points with four matches to play, while Atalanta now face a challenging road ahead as they sit in seventh, seven points off the sixth spot required for European qualification.
