Elye Wahi converted a late penalty to earn Nice a 1-1 draw in the derby against sixth-placed Marseille, who have now dropped points in four of their last five Ligue 1 fixtures (D1, L3).
Fresh from their passage to the Coupe de France final, Nice swiftly redirected their focus to the urgent task of fighting for Ligue 1 survival.
With their position in the table being precarious, it was expected that Claude Puel’s team would take a more defensive stance. The hosts, chasing European football, posed an early threat within the first five minutes as Arthur Vermeeren’s header from the far post forced Yehvann Diouf to expertly divert the ball away from danger.
Diouf was called into action again just before the 30-minute mark, making a sharp save to deny Leonardo Balerdi, who was aiming to mark his 150th Ligue 1 appearance with a goal.
Following the break, Marseille continued to exert pressure, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missing a golden opportunity as he headed wide, moments before Tochukwu Nnadi was thwarted by Juma Bah’s impressive block.
As Marseille pressed forward, Wahi and Mohamed-Ali Cho countered and reminded the home side of Nice’s attacking potential, forcing Geronimo Rulli to make two quick, vital saves.
Amid rising frustration at Stade Velodrome, a wave of relief swept through the crowd when the hosts finally found the net, courtesy of an unexpected hero, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The Danish international met Nnadi’s dangerous cross with a diving header that sailed past Diouf.
Hojbjerg’s first league goal since November spurred Puel into action, opting to introduce Kail Boudache. However, the newcomer wasted no time in failing to convert a glorious chance, heading wide of an empty goal after Rulli’s uncharacteristic error in possession.
Fortunately for Boudache, Nice were awarded another opportunity to equalise when Tadjidine Mmadi inadvertently caught former Marseille player Jonathan Clauss, granting Wahi the chance to display his poise from the penalty spot. His impeccable Panenka secured a draw that lifts his side five points clear of the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Habib Beye’s team now finds themselves four points off the top four, facing a challenging road ahead in their quest for UEFA Champions League qualification.
