Croatian midfielder Luka Modric is set to have surgery for a fractured left cheekbone, as announced by his Serie A club AC Milan on Monday. This injury comes just weeks before the 40-year-old is scheduled to make his fifth appearance in the World Cup.
Modric sustained the injury during a head collision with Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli in Sunday’s scoreless draw at the San Siro, leaving the pitch with just ten minutes to go.
Despite clearly showing signs of distress, Modric stayed on the bench for the remainder of the match without any medical assistance. However, following a medical assessment, it has been confirmed that he will need to undergo surgery later today.
Currently, Milan sits in third place in the league standings, 12 points adrift of leaders Inter Milan, with only four matches left to play. Given his injury, Modric is uncertain to participate in the final stretch of the season. If he recovers in time for the World Cup, he may have to wear a protective mask during the tournament.
The World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, is set to kick off on June 11, with Croatia drawn in Group L alongside England, Ghana, and Panama.
