Porto seized the opportunity presented by Sporting’s misstep in their derby clash with Benfica, strengthening their position at the pinnacle of the Portuguese league by defeating Tondela, largely due to a superb display from Danish international midfielder Victor Froholdt.
Following Porto’s exit from the Europa League at the hands of Nottingham Forest (1-0), coach Francesco Farioli made seven alterations to his squad. Rodrigo Mora and Pietuszewski were reinstated to the starting eleven, while Tondela, opting for a five-defender setup, welcomed Brayan Medina and Tiago Manso back to the lineup after their 2-2 draw with Gil Vicente.

Though Froholdt was in the starting lineup, Porto faced initial difficulty against a well-structured and disciplined Tondela defence, which proved formidable during the opening half.
The home team nearly took the lead when Joe Hodge handled a Rodrigo Mora shot in the area; however, Bernardo Fontes denied Alan Varela’s penalty attempt, pushing the ball to safety.
Just three minutes into the second half, Porto broke the deadlock when Turkish striker Deniz Gul deftly navigated past three defenders to set up Gabriel Veiga, who simply needed to tap the ball into an empty net.
This opening goal reinvigorated Porto’s offensive push, and they almost extended their lead when Froholdt’s shot struck the post. Following the goal, Tondela faltered and were punished again in the 65th minute as Froholdt showcased his excellent form.
Moses Sithole erred during the build-up, allowing Froholdt, ever alert, to seize the opportunity. He then unleashed a clever left-footed shot that slipped beneath Fontes’ reach, doubling Porto’s lead.
No further goals were added to the scoreboard, meaning Porto now sits seven and eight points clear of Benfica and Sporting in second and third place, respectively.
