Christian Eriksen, the Danish international playmaker known for his time at Tottenham during their golden era that saw them reach the Champions League final seven years ago, admits it’s painful to witness his former club’s battle to avoid relegation, though he remains confident in their squad’s quality to steer clear of the drop.
Christian Eriksen played a crucial role in what is often referred to as the Pochettino era at Tottenham Hotspur (approximately 2014–2019), a period marked by significant success for the club.
During his time at Spurs, he was honoured as the Player of the Year on two occasions and secured a place in the 2017–18 PFA Team of the Year. From 2013 to 2020, Eriksen made 305 appearances, netting 69 goals and providing 88 assists for the team.
Now with Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga and also facing relegation challenges, Eriksen continues to monitor his old club’s fortunes, expressing his sorrow over their struggles this season in a recent interview with Viaplay.
“Watching from afar is tough. It’s frustrating. I genuinely hope they pull through because a club like Tottenham belongs in the Premier League, no doubt about it.”
“It will be intriguing to see if they can turn it around. I’m crossing my fingers for them; they’re too talented to be relegated. However, that’s the common sentiment when discussing teams at risk. But player for player, they simply shouldn’t be facing relegation.”
Currently, Tottenham has amassed 31 points from 33 matches and find themselves two points adrift of West Ham United, who are just above the relegation zone. With Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers already relegated, Spurs are in a vital fight for their survival, with five matches left in the season.
