Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane faces uncertainty ahead of the World Cup after sustaining fractures to his jaw and chin while playing for Granada in Spain’s second division.
The 27-year-old, son of legendary French footballer Zinedine Zidane, was removed from the match due to a concussion following a collision with an opponent during his side’s 4-2 home loss to Almeria on Sunday.
He is anticipated to be sidelined for the remainder of the season and may require surgery, which could extend his recovery time.
“The player, in discussion with the club’s medical team, will make a decision on the appropriate treatment in the coming hours,” the club stated in a release late Monday.
Luca Zidane serves as Algeria’s starting goalkeeper, while his backup options, Anthony Mandrea and Melvin Mastil, are also currently nursing injuries.
Algeria’s World Cup journey kicks off on June 16 against the defending champions, Argentina.
