Barcelona midfielder Gavi acknowledged on Tuesday that the Catalan club is not invincible, despite being unbeaten in 2025.
The Spanish league leaders are riding a remarkable streak, having gone 22 matches without a loss across all competitions, and they will face Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
For the first time in years, Barcelona is viewed as strong contenders to secure the trophy they last won in 2015, while also pursuing the prospect of a quadruple.
“We’re enjoying a fantastic season but we know we’re not invincible. Football is unpredictable—you can’t always win,” Gavi stated at a press conference.
“We must approach each match with humility and remember our roots. It’s vital to stay grounded and take it one game at a time.”
“There are still many fixtures ahead, and we aim to claim as many titles as we can, but we have to focus on each match.”
Barca manager Hansi Flick has rotated Gavi, Fermin Lopez, and injured player Dani Olmo in the attacking midfield role.
The 20-year-old Spain international is recognised for his tireless work ethic and fierce approach, and he responded to critics who question his technical abilities.
“People do say that I struggle with my football, but they don’t understand a thing,” Gavi remarked.
“That’s just how it is; I get it. It’s football—everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that’s fine.”
After missing nearly a year due to a serious knee injury, Gavi returned to action in October and reflected positively on his season thus far, even if he’s not a primary starter under Flick.
“Admittedly, my role isn’t as pivotal as in previous seasons, but that’s expected after such a long spell out,” Gavi explained.
“I’m really pleased with my recovery. If you’d told me I’d have this kind of season after coming back from injury, I would have gladly accepted it.”
Flick emphasised the need for hard work to overcome Dortmund.
“I’ve always maintained that dreaming is allowed, but we must remain level-headed,” the coach said.
“It’s crucial for us to recognise that our achievements have come from hard work and meticulous preparation.”
“We don’t want this to be the end. We’ll see if we can bring the same intensity as we have in recent matches.”
“We haven’t lost a match this year, and we want to maintain that record.”
