Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has downplayed suggestions that his team are the frontrunners ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Aston Villa on Wednesday.
“In our previous match against Liverpool in the last 16, the bookmakers didn’t give us a shot. In football, the notion of favourites doesn’t truly exist,” Enrique stated during a press briefing on Tuesday.
“All eight teams in the quarter-finals have earned their spot through hard work. We must perform to the best of our abilities to claim victory on the pitch.”
PSG striker Desire Doue echoed his manager’s sentiments.
“Aston Villa’s presence here indicates that they’ve proven themselves,” the 19-year-old remarked. “Discussing favourites doesn’t seem wise; Aston Villa are a formidable side with quality players.”
Aston Villa’s head coach Unai Emery, who managed PSG from 2016 to 2018, will be returning to the Parc des Princes.
“He’s an exceptional coach,” Enrique said. “Aston Villa have developed significantly over the past two years under Unai Emery’s guidance.
“They’re quite similar to us in terms of having many versatile players. It’s challenging to predict their lineup, especially after their winter transfer window, where they made some impressive signings. This will be a competitive and challenging tie for both sides.”
Enrique remains confident that his squad will maintain their focus following their recent triumph in securing a 13th French Ligue 1 title.
“I believe we will continue to showcase an excellent version of PSG, maintaining or perhaps even increasing our intensity,” he stated.
Unfortunately, PSG captain Marquinhos will be unavailable due to suspension.
“This isn’t a major setback; it highlights our team’s depth. Regardless of who is missing, we have the strength to adapt,” Enrique commented.
