Bronson Xerri has shared his thoughts on a “challenging” month spent away from Canterbury’s first-grade team, following a triumphant return on Thursday night.
The electrifying centre faced the disappointment of being dropped after the season opener in Las Vegas and spent time in reserve grade, while also serving as a six-man bench player.
However, with captain Stephen Crichton sustaining an injury last weekend, Xerri seized the moment as the Bulldogs claimed a surprise 32-16 victory over Penrith.

Xerri contributed impressively with a try assist, four tackle breaks, and 58 run metres, playing a significant role in helping the Bulldogs silence critics regarding their season.
“That was a fantastic win; I know Ciro [Cameron Ciraldo] will be pleased with us. We prepared thoroughly for this match, and it’s great to come away with the win,” Xerri remarked in a post-match interview with Nine.
“Facing Penrith is always a mental challenge; we knew they’d battle until the final whistle, and I’m proud of how we held our ground,” he added.
While securing the two points alleviates some concerns, Xerri’s position at the Bulldogs will continue to generate discussion, particularly with Crichton’s impending return from injury.

The 25-year-old admitted that being sidelined and later benched on Good Friday—despite Crichton leaving the field—was a tough situation to manage.
“I took it on the chin,” Xerri said. “Ciro had his reasons for keeping me off, and I prioritised the team’s needs, it’s just part of the game.”
“It has been challenging, and I had to revisit my situation and engage in honest discussions with Ciro. We both understand our positions, and I have a deep affection for this club,” he continued. “I feel truly fortunate to have another chance to make an impact tonight.”

Ciraldo expressed his admiration for Xerri’s performance upon his return, highlighting a crucial aspect of his game that might not have been visible to those watching from either Accor Stadium or home.
“He performed admirably, and the most satisfying part, which many may not have noticed, was his outstanding communication during the match,” stated the Bulldogs coach in a press conference.
“The players mentioned how pleased they were with that. It was an area he needed to improve, and while spectators might not appreciate it as much as we do, it was fantastic to see him incorporate that into his play.”
With Crichton expected to be out of action for several weeks, Xerri has a valuable opportunity to solidify his place in the Canterbury lineup.
