Sydney FC gained a significant advantage in their bid for a top six finish, triumphing over Macarthur Bulls with a 2-0 victory at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday evening.
During the first half, Sydney FC created several opportunities but were repeatedly denied by an outstanding performance from Filip Kurto, who made a series of crucial saves to keep his team in the game.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 58th minute when Patryk Klimala netted his eighth goal of the season, firing a low shot past Kurto after Douglas Costa had struck the crossbar moments earlier.
The Sky Blues doubled their lead in the 72nd minute through Adrian Segecic, who has been in great scoring form. He capitalised on a misjudged clearance from Bulls defender Kevin Boli, which ended up ricocheting into the empty net, securing a 2-0 lead and the three points.
Macarthur had a late surge of chances to reduce the deficit, but the Sky Blues held their ground to achieve consecutive clean sheets and climb into the top six.
For the Bulls, coach Mile Sterjovski’s squad now sits eighth on the table, trailing the Sky Blues by four points in sixth place.
With a history of nine red cards across their last 11 encounters, it was perhaps unsurprising to see a yellow card brandished after just four minutes; Liam Rose received a booking following a hefty tackle on Lolley in midfield.
The Sky Blues were dominant in the early exchanges, forcing Bulls keeper Kurto to make an early save, denying Klimala from a tight angle before the two Poles battled again.
With an exquisite outside-of-the-boot pass from Costa, Klimala broke away from his marker and volleyed towards the near post, only to be thwarted by an incredible reflex save from Kurto, who, while moving to his right, leapt back to his left to deflect the ball away.
Already hailed as one of the league’s premier goalkeepers, Kurto made another spectacular save to deny a curling free kick from Costa.
The Brazilian’s left-footed shot, which clipped the wall, was tipped over the bar by a diving Kurto, who then reacted swiftly to clear the danger from the ensuing corner.
Taking control of the match, Costa skilfully navigated into the box, unleashing a thunderous right-footed strike that struck the crossbar, much to the relief of the Bulls’ goalkeeper.
It felt as though a goal was inevitable, and it finally came when Kurto was finally beaten.
Receiving a pass from Lolley, Klimala outpaced Bulls defender Tomislav Uskok and struck a first-time shot past Kurto, sending the travelling Sydney FC fans into raptures as they celebrated the 1-0 lead.
Kurto rescued Macarthur once more, this time thwarting Lolley from close range with another quick reaction save.
However, the Bulls shot themselves in the foot in the 72nd minute as substitute Segecic pounced on a defensive misjudgement.
After receiving a short goal kick from Kurto, defender Boli hesitated before attempting to play out, but Segecic intercepted the pass, and the ball ricocheted into the unattended net, making it 2-0 and marking the young player’s eighth league goal of the season.
Macarthur finally registered their first shot on target in the 87th minute when former Sydney FC defender Kealey Adamson unleashed a powerful drive, which was saved by Sky Blues keeper Harrison Devenish-Meares; Uskok then headed over a prime chance from the resulting corner.
In their desperate search for a way back, the Bulls squandered another promising opportunity late in the game as substitute Yianni Nicolaou curled a shot over the bar from inside the box, leaving his teammates frustrated.
This victory propels Sydney FC into the top six, overtaking local rivals Western Sydney Wanderers, who are set to face Perth Glory on Sunday at CommBank Stadium.
