Dominic Solanke’s successful penalty kick propelled Tottenham Hotspur to their first semi-final in a UEFA competition since 2019, as Spurs put an end to Eintracht Frankfurt’s remarkable 12-match unbeaten streak in the UEFA Europa League with a narrow 1-0 win at Deutsche Bank Park.
Eintracht Frankfurt created the initial opportunity when Kaua Santos launched a 70-yard pass that found Hugo Ekitike behind Tottenham’s defence. However, Micky van de Ven tracked back just in time to thwart the Eagles’ top scorer before he could find the back of the net.
After weathering some early pressure from Frankfurt, Spurs began to find their rhythm and created a significant chance when Mathys Tel’s curling shot was expertly saved by a fully stretched Santos. The visitors then earned a penalty as Santos collided with James Maddison inside the area.
Solanke stepped up to take the spot-kick and executed it flawlessly, firing the ball down the middle of the net to break his 11-match drought without a goal.
To maintain their slender advantage, Spurs knew they had to become the first team this season to keep a clean sheet at Deutsche Bank Park. Their task became even tougher after the break when Fares Chaibi’s free-kick narrowly missed the post.
Nevertheless, Spurs continued to assert themselves offensively, with Cristian Romero heading just wide from a corner taken by Pedro Porro.
As expected, the visitors endured significant late pressure, with Frankfurt fervently seeking an equaliser. Chaïbi believed he had found it with a close-range attempt, but Guglielmo Vicario made a crucial reflex save to deny him.
Despite several late chances, Dino Toppmoller’s Frankfurt could not unlock Spurs’ defence, bringing an end to the Eagles’ ambitions of claiming a third Europa League title.
Solanke’s composed penalty in the first half ultimately made all the difference as Spurs triumphed, breaking their four-match losing spell on the road and keeping alive their quest for their first European title since 1984.
