Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League journey is not over, despite suffering a 2-1 loss to Legia Warsaw at Stamford Bridge, as they advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-2 aggregate win.
With Chelsea only one point behind the fifth-placed team in the Premier League, which grants a final Champions League qualification spot, and boasting a 3-0 lead from the first leg of the tie, the mood among Blues fans was subdued following a disappointing 2-2 draw with Ipswich that extended their run of poor domestic results.
Manager Enzo Maresca opted for a stronger lineup than many anticipated, featuring Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Cucurella, and Reece James.
The Blues made a promising start; Palmer’s shot went wide from a strong position, and Legia’s goalkeeper, Vladan Kovacevic, was forced to save attempts from both Christopher Nkunku and Palmer within moments of each other.
However, Legia quickly asserted themselves in the match, winning a penalty within the first ten minutes when Filip Jorgensen tripped Tomas Pekhart.
Although the Danish keeper managed to get a hand to Pekhart’s penalty, he was unable to prevent it from hitting the bottom corner of the net.

The visitors drew energy from their early lead, and after a strong backing from their travelling supporters, they came close to doubling their advantage when Ryoya Morishita’s shot skimmed past the post.
However, Chelsea soon found their rhythm and equalised shortly before the 30-minute mark, with Cucurella tapping in a well-placed cross.
The Spaniard had a potential second goal ruled offside moments later when he found the net from close range.
Legia returned to the pitch with increased intensity, and after Jorgensen thwarted Claude Goncalves, the Polish side regained the lead when Steve Kapuadi headed home from a corner inside the six-yard box.
This goal sparked a response from Chelsea, with Jadon Sancho forcing Kovacevic into a save before substitutes Noni Madueke and Tyrique George had their shots valiantly cleared off the line, preserving Legia’s unlikely lead for the evening.
Maresca and his squad will aim to take the positives from this match. For the immediate future, they remain in contention for silverware and have a chance to become the first club to win all three of UEFA’s major club-level tournaments currently in play.
Nonetheless, considering they were the overwhelming favourites to win overall, this defeat will undoubtedly be a bitter pill to swallow. Meanwhile, while Legia’s European campaign may have concluded, they can take pride in achieving a historic victory on English soil.
