The Cronulla Sharks have suffered an early setback this pre-season, with star winger Sione Katoa requiring shoulder surgery.
On Thursday, the Sharks confirmed that Katoa underwent the procedure earlier this week to address his injured joint.
The injury occurred during a trial match against the Warriors two weeks ago.
Cronulla reports that Katoa is expected to be sidelined for “four to five months,” effectively ruling him out for the first half of the NRL season.

Katoa was absent from the flight with the rest of the squad as they departed for Las Vegas on Thursday.
He plays a crucial role in the Sharks’ line-up and is known for his ability to score thrilling tries, often by jumping over or around the corner post.
In his time with the Sharks, he has scored 76 tries in 113 NRL appearances, with 17 of those occurring last season.
His absence will leave a significant gap in the squad.
The Sharks have indicated that Marwene Hiroti or Samuel Stonestreet are in contention to step in for him.
Craig Fitzgibbon’s side is set to take on the four-time reigning premiers, Penrith, in Vegas on March 2.
