A moment of forgetfulness from Morgan Knowles epitomised a shocking opening half for the Dolphins on Thursday night, as the English forward was sin-binned for a professional foul.
After suffering a defeat in the Battle of Brisbane last week, the Dolphins were immediately put on the back foot against a Sea Eagles side that had just sacked coach Anthony Seibold six days prior, appointing Kieran Foran as his replacement.
Haumole Olakau’atu was in dominant form early on for the visitors, setting up the first try by slicing through some lacklustre defence to connect with Tom Trbojevic.
Trbojevic was in the mix again shortly after, passing it on to Lehi Hopoate in the corner.
“That was superb handling,” Cameron Smith commented on Nine.
Things took a turn for the worse for the Dolphins midway through the first half when a blunder from Selwyn Cobbo led directly to Knowles’ sin-binning.

As the defence retreated following Cobbo’s dropped catch, Knowles ran directly into a pass from a Manly player instead of pulling up, earning himself a trip to the sin bin.
Knowles attempted to plead his case with referee Grant Atkins, but his arguments fell on deaf ears.
“The damage is only getting worse now,” Smith remarked.

Taking full advantage of their numerical superiority, Manly capitalised when Kulikefu Finefeuiaki fumbled the ball, allowing Hopoate to sprint away for a long-range try, adding to the Dolphins’ woes.
“They’re shooting themselves in the foot,” Smith commented.
Olakau’atu continued to be a menace, delivering a clever short pass to Reuben Garrick, who surged through a massive gap to score Manly’s fourth try.
“They are absolutely on fire,” Andrew Johns exclaimed during the commentary.
Luke Brooks extended the lead to a staggering 28-0 for the Sea Eagles just before halftime, following a deft grubber kick from halves partner Jamal Fogarty.
“I can hardly believe what we’ve witnessed in that first half… this is catastrophic for the Dolphins,” Johnathan Thurston remarked at halftime.
