Ernest Nuamah (21) played a pivotal role in Olympique Lyonnais’ impressive 4-1 victory away at relegation-battling Montpellier, contributing both a goal and an assist in just a three-minute span. This result marked Lyon’s fourth successive away win against the hosts in Ligue 1.
The first half suggested it was only a matter of time before Lyon would score, especially considering Montpellier’s tendency to concede first-half goals in nine of their last ten home league fixtures.
Lyon’s breakthrough came in the third minute when Georgia midfielder Georges Mikautadze netted an early goal.
The 24-year-old received a precise pass from Rayan Cherki on the right side of the penalty area and struck the ball past Benjamin Lecomte, marking his sixth Ligue 1 goal this season.
The tempo of the first half dipped significantly until Montpellier ignited the match with a long throw-in in the 38th minute.
Andy Delort successfully held off his defender to flick the throw-in to Teji Savanier, who then crossed for Tanguy Coulibaly to finish, bringing the hosts level and ensuring they entered halftime with a boost in morale.
Unfortunately for the bottom-placed Ligue 1 side, their momentum was swiftly halted by Lyon’s dynamic start to the second half.
Nuamah reclaimed the lead for the visitors just six minutes after the break, cutting inside onto his left foot and blasting the ball into the far corner to quieten the home crowd.
Shortly thereafter, the Lyon winger turned into a provider, delivering a curling inswinging cross for Corentin Tolisso, who deftly flicked his header past an unmoving Lecomte.
With Montpellier’s spirit noticeably diminished, Lyon exhibited their confidence and added a fourth goal through Alexandre Lacazette, who calmly placed the ball into the net after connecting with a precise cross from fellow substitute Abner Vinícius.
The captain’s seventh goal of the Ligue 1 season capped off Lyon’s first away victory since December, lifting them to fifth place temporarily, while leaving Montpellier six points shy of safety after suffering their third consecutive defeat.
