Andrew Johns has forecast a significant wake-up call for the premiership favourites this round, predicting a defeat for the Panthers against a side that has yet to live up to expectations in 2026.
Following their first defeat of the season and several key player absences, Johns feels Penrith may struggle with the sweltering heat and humidity of Darwin, where they face the Dolphins on Friday night.
With young centre Casey McLean suspended and representative forward Liam Martin sidelined with a knee injury, coach Ivan Cleary has had to delve deeper into his squad, which has led Johns to believe the Panthers are now vulnerable.

“I’m expecting a huge upset. The biggest surprise of the season thus far—Dolphins,” Johns commented during an episode of Wide World of Sports’ Freddy and the Eighth’s Tips.
“Their bench appears somewhat light, given the heat and humidity, so they’ll really need to rely on their reserves here.”
“The Dolphins come in fresh after their bye, and I think they have what it takes to secure the win.”
The Bureau of Meteorology indicates Darwin will experience a peak of 33 degrees on Friday, with forecasts of rain and possible thunderstorms in the oppressive climate.
The Dolphins might benefit from their rest, despite their inconsistent form this season, which has seen them secure only two victories out of five matches.
Currently, they sit in 12th place on the ladder following a nail-biting 18-14 win over local rivals the Titans just before their week six bye.

Brad Fittler, however, remains sceptical about the Dolphins’ chances against one of the top teams in the league, mentioning their failure to adapt to the evolving game this season.
“I just don’t believe they possess the attacking prowess,” Fittler shared on Freddy and the Eighth’s Tips.
“I don’t think Katoa has really adapted, and overall the team hasn’t adjusted to the changes. Last year, they boasted the best scoring record; now they sit at 14th, indicating their gameplay has deteriorated somewhat.”
“I’m backing the Panthers to bounce back strong.”
