The enduring success and commitment of Motorsport Australia’s officials at the FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2026 is spurred on by those making their debut in this prestigious event.
This year, 219 Motorsport Australia officials are participating in the Australian Grand Prix for the first time, contributing significantly to a total cohort of over 1,000 – a figure that often experiences high demand shortly after applications open.
The surge in popularity of Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’ has captivated a new audience, inspiring many aspiring officials to dedicate themselves to the sport long after the race concludes at Albert Park.
Hayley Laanbroek, originally from New Zealand and currently residing in Melbourne, has taken on the role of track marshall in zone nine at the Grand Prix, setting her sights on advancing within the officiating realm.
“My aspiration has always been to climb the ranks as an official,” Laanbroek shared.
“I began with small-scale enduro races and other categories, gradually progressing to higher-profile events.”
“Looking ahead, I am eager to participate in more significant events on my path towards achieving my Bronze Official accreditation, and there’s no event more significant than the Australian Grand Prix.”
“I’ve always yearned for this type of experience, and returning to the track is something I have truly missed.”

Bethany Leong, a close friend of Hayley and a local aerospace engineering student, recognised early on her ambition to officiate at the Formula 1 level, mapping out her journey to reach that goal.
“After obtaining my General Officials licence, I actively sought opportunities to flag marshal at various grassroots events to gain experience,” Leong explained.
“I applied to marshal at the Grand Prix in 2024 and 2025, but unexpected circumstances prevented me from attending both times, so I suppose the third time is indeed the charm, and I’m thrilled to finally be here.”
First-time officials have also come from abroad, including Harsha Dandala, who relocated to Australia from India in recent years and has been assigned the role of marshal zone observer for the weekend’s activities.

Currently residing in New South Wales, Harsha’s passion for Formula 1 fuels his excitement to engage with fellow officials at various racing events.
“Since arriving here, I’ve officiated at numerous races and attended several Australian Grands Prix as a spectator,” Dandala said.
“Every time I attended this race as a fan, I was inspired by the officials working at this magnificent event.
“When I discovered I could apply to become a Grand Prix official, I was determined to make it happen. It feels surreal to have achieved this dream.”
