The newly appointed head coach of the England women’s cricket team is exercising caution regarding the squad’s fitness but acknowledges that “greater accountability” is essential following a disappointing summer in Australia, which included a staggering 16-0 defeat and accusations of inadequate conditioning.
Charlotte Edwards, the leading run-scorer in England’s international cricket history, was announced this week as the replacement for Jon Lewis, who was dismissed last month after the team faced a historic loss in the Women’s Ashes series.
Former England spinner Alex Hartley voiced concerns about the team’s fitness during her commentary in Australia, stating: “Approximately 80 per cent of the England squad are fit and athletic enough, but there are players in that team who are not meeting expectations in terms of fitness.”
Hartley admitted that her remarks struck a nerve, resulting in some coaches and players giving her “the cold shoulder.” She mentioned that former teammate Sophie Ecclestone even declined to be interviewed by her.
Fitness has since become a significant topic in UK media following Edwards’ appointment as coach.
“Regarding fitness, I’ll be heading to Loughborough next week, where the team will engage in a fitness session, and I’ll assess them based on that,” Edwards stated.

“What I desire is increased accountability from players regarding their fitness.
“I want this not to be a recurring topic for discussion moving forward. It’s crucial to me.
“In terms of our professional standards, anyone familiar with me knows I uphold high expectations, and that’s what I aim to instil within this group.
“This is a new beginning for all of us, and I’m genuinely excited about the opportunities ahead.”
In a BBC interview, Edwards also stated: “Fitness is non-negotiable. We must be fit.”
Edwards’ tenure as coach is set to commence with three T20 matches and three one-day internationals against the West Indies at home during May and June.
