Bayern Munich’s upcoming match against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday is expected to be a tough encounter, as noted by coach Vincent Kompany on Friday. The league leaders are keen to recover from their unexpected 3-2 defeat at home to VfL Bochum last week.
The Bavarians received a morale boost on Tuesday with a solid 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, securing a comprehensive aggregate win of 5-0 and advancing to the Champions League quarter-finals, where they will face Italy’s Inter Milan.
In the Bundesliga standings, Bayern currently hold an eight-point advantage over defending champions Leverkusen, who occupy second place despite their disappointing loss to Bochum after leading 2-0.
“There are no straightforward matches, and it’s not uncommon for a game to present unexpected challenges,” Kompany stated during a press conference. “We must secure a win, and that’s exactly what we intend to do.”
Union Berlin, sitting in 14th place, have faced difficulties this season but managed to turn things around last week with a 2-1 victory against fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, snapping a three-match losing streak.
Kompany praised Union’s performance in their win over Frankfurt, adding: “We do not underestimate our adversaries, but we must bring our best game on the day.”
“Our primary objective is to deliver a complete performance and secure all three points,” the Belgian coach emphasised.
Bayern sit on 61 points, with Leverkusen trailing at 53 ahead of their clash against VfB Stuttgart on Sunday, while the surprising Mainz 05 are in third with 44 points.
